Yogacarya Observations

Commercial or "pop yoga" focuses more on the stretching and physical aspect of Yoga. There may be occasional "new age" affirmations to bolster the practitioner's sense of self worth. All this is good and wonderful but devoid of any spiritual nutrition. Authentic Yoga on the other hand emphasizes the Eight-Limbed Path of Ashtanga as laid out in Patanjali's Yoga Sutra, among other ancient texts. Properly done, each limb is observed, studied and understood in its original Sanskrit and not glossed over for expediency or dumbing down. This path informs what you eat, what you do, what you think, how to breathe and how to relate to your highest self and to others. It establishes a covenant with one's highest self in order to fulfill one's...

International Yoga Day

With the urging of Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, the United Nations has designated June 21 to be observed around the world as International Yoga Day. June 21 is the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere and the start of winter in the southern hemisphere. On this day, we honor Surya, the sun. We are reminded about our planet's balance in orbit around the sun and how life became possible here. We are also mindful about how Yoga is an essential cultural contribution from India, now expanding worldwide to influence all humanity and all cultures. It is vital as well as respectful to celebrate this Indian contribution by keeping its roots grounded in Indian traditions. That is why we at Anuttara Yoga, continue to...

Sanatana Dharma is the Eternal Path.

There are many spiritual expressions. Those based on loving kindness are all part of this Eternal Path. There are no other paths, only this one. There is but one final destination. There are many vehicles, many travelers. Some arrive at their destination, others get to try again and again, as often as it takes, lifetime after lifetime. As a Yogi, I believe that authentic and devotional Yoga, Divine Union, of any denomination, is the best road map and guide for this journey to the Heavenly Realms. Yogacarya Observations....

Vinyasa is a dance. We dance to music.

Vinyasa is a dance. We dance to music. The music is rhythmical but not formulaic. Make sure the music speaks to the flow. If the music makes it to the Top 40 Hit List, then it has all the artistic nutrition of Bubblegum and Pop. Remove it at once for it appeals more to one's pre-adolescence and not to the more sophisticated and skilled adult Anuttara Vinyasa practitioner. The one who would seek spiritual union and not the lovesick ruminations of romantic attachments. Yogacarya Observations.   Vinyasa, Part I...

A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE from PARAMAHANSA YOGANANDA – December 1950

My Christmas wish for you this year is twofold: that the consciousness of Christ be manifest in you through deep meditation, and that your exemplary actions will persuade others to abandon their evil or worldly ways and become spiritual. Both meditation and action are necessary or the spiritual path, for they contribute toward individual and mass evolution. It is not God's will to develop spiritually in a selfish way, i.e., without extending help to others who are suffering. So remember always to render service to mass evolution, while seeking the Father through regular practices of deep meditation. The more one develops spiritually, the deeper becomes his or her love and compassion for humanity. Accompanying love and compassion is the desire to uplift humanity from the throes...
